Alpine Experience Heli hike thumb

Alpine Experience Heli-Hike

The Alpine Experience Heli-Hike trip takes you high into the mountains above Glenorchy and the head of Lake Wakatipu. These glacial carved mountains and high alpine tussock lands offer incredible views of Lake Wakatipu and the Mt Aspiring National Park. This scenery was used in the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy.

The Alpine Experience Heli-Hike is a small bespoke privately guided trip. The trip includes a helicopter flight into the mountains, once we land high in the mountains we will descend towards lake Wakatipu. The 7km and 900 meter descent from the mountains tops to the valley floor takes approximately 4 hours to complete.

Glenorchy at the head of lake Wakatipu is a 48km drive north from Queenstown. The mountains above Glenorchy were sculpted by glaciers until 15,000 years ago when they started melting back and filling up Lake Wakatipu. The glaciers on the highest mountains in the area still exist and on a clear day it is possible to see the glaciated Mt Earnslaw and the other glaciers of the Mt Aspiring National Park. In the summer time the seasonal snow on the mid level peaks melts back to reveal a tussock, beech forest, and sub-alpine shrub land.
