Queenstown Alpine Rock Climbing on the Remarkables mountain range. The Remarkables offers excellent multi-pitch alpine rock climbing and a variety of different styles and grades of climbing to suit all levels.
Options include steep multi-pitch climbs to reach the summit of single and double cone, through to easy scrambles on warm rock in the sun taking in the views on offer in this amazing alpine environment.
Most climbing area can be reached within an hours hike of the access road making this an ideal venue for single day climbing trips or multi-day climbing trips based from a spectacular campsite in an alpine meadow close to Lake Alta.
One of the best one day alpine rock ridge climbs in New Zealand. From December onwards the ridge of mostly free of snow and ice. This committing, exposed and exhilarating alpine ridge traverse has sustained climbing and some sections of more challenging climbing. When the route is free from snow and ice it can be climbed in approach shoes or light weight hiking or mountaineering boots.
This multi-pitch rock route follows the Double Cone East buttress to the summit of Double Cone. The climbing is up to grade 17 and rock shoes are required to make the ascent. From the summit of Double Cone the Grand Traverse is completed over to the summit of Single Cone. This is a full day of alpine climbing.
The Lake Alta Slabs are Queenstown Mountain Guides favourite multi-pitch alpine rock climbing areas. The lake Alta slabs are distinguished by excellent rock quality and spectacular views of Lake Alta and the surround Remarkable's Range. This area has 3 pitch climbs from grade 15-19 and it is possible to climb several routes in a single day of climbing. Descent is by abseil back to the base of the climbs.
The classic north east buttress of Single Cone is a multi-pitch rock route leading to the summit of Single Cone. The route involves steep and exposed scrambling high above Lake Alta with some pitches of steeper rock. This is an excellent alternative to the standard ascent route on Single Cone if you are looking for a more interesting and challenging climb.
This climbing area is located 2000m up the steep and exposed west face of the Remarkables high above Lake Wakatipu. The incredible views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains combined with the good quality schist rock make this a stunning climbing area. The four pitch 3 star classic Indian Summer (grade 18) is our favourite climb on the west face. The multi-pitch rock routes on the west face of the Remarkables suit climbers with previous rock climbing experience that can follow grade 18 and remove traditional protection.
