Single Cone Summit Climb

Single Cone is a classic Queenstown climbing experience. The guided Single Cone climb by the standard south ridge is suitable for first time climbers wanting to experience an exhilarating day of climbing and experience the incredible views from the summit of the Remarkables. This climb is suitable for groups of up to 4 people.

A climb of Single Cone takes you to the highest point on the Remarkable's mountain range. The view from the summit is incredible with the 2000m west face of the Remarkable's sharply dropping away to the shores of Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown. In the summer months climbing is straightforward, walking on tussock and rock with a steep climb up the final gully, followed by a steep and very exposed ridge traverse to reach the summit.

In the winter season the use of ice axe and crampons are required. The climb involves crossing snow fields with snow shoes or crampons and ice axe. Above this we climb the final snow and ice couloir to reach the summit ridge. It normally takes 4 -5 hours to reach the summit.

Grand Traverse of Single & Double Cone

The Grand Traverse of Single & Double Cone is a steep committing alpine ridge line suitable for climbers with previous mountaineering & rock climbing experience.

The Grand Traverse of Single and Double Cone is one of the most classic single day alpine routes in New Zealand climbing. The steep, exposed and sustained ridge line provides excellent  rock climbing on with incredible views 2000m down the west face of the Remarkables to Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown. The eastern side of the ridge line is almost as spectacular as you climb high above Lake Alta.

The Grand Traverse requires an early and start takes 8-10 hours to complete the traverse. This is a must do if you are visiting Queenstown for climbing.

Client review

"The best thing I did in Queenstown and one of the best experiences of my life. Mike and Rupert were very helpful and friendly right from last minute initial inquiry to the full day of instruction and guided climbing. Getting to summit single cone was spectacular! Rupert was great to chat to throughout the climb and I knew I was in good hands at all times. Highly recommend giving them a call if you're interested in climbing!" J Kean, Australia

Season

Queenstown Mountain Guides run guided mountaineering trips all year round on the Remarkables. The nature of the climbing changes with the season.

Winter - Expect heavy snow cover on the Remarkables. This time of year is more suited to snow and ice climbing.

Spring - Remarkables are covered in snow but the rock faces and ridge lines are now free of snow making it possible to climb the rock alpine ridge lines. This is a good time of year for the Grand Traverse of Single & Double Cone.

Summer - The winter snow is now mostly melted away leaving only the occasional snow field. By the end of the summer there will be no snow left on the Remarkables. This time of year suits climbing rock routes to the summits of Single and Double Cone and is also a great time of year for the Grand Traverse of Single & Double Cone.
