Helicopter Ski Touring & Snowboarding Camp

Queenstown Mountain Guides Helicopter Ski Touring & Snowboarding Camps takes you by helicopter into the best ski touring locations in the Queenstown & Wanaka area.

Locations include the Harris Mountains, the Humbolt, the Richardson, and the Buchanan mountain ranges. These areas can only be easily accessed by helicopter. The terrain, scenery, and skiing are epic. We have the flexibility to choose the best location depending on snow and weather conditions for the duration of the trip.

Included in the Helicopter Accessed Ski Touring Camp are two helicopter flights so we can access the best ski touring and split boarding terrain and then fly out at the end of the trip.

This program gives us access to the best terrain in Queenstown and Wanaka backcountry. The areas we can visit include the Humbolt and the Richardson mountain ranges (above Glenorcy), the Harris Mountains between Queenstown and Wanaka and the Buchanan mountain range near Mt Aspiring. We also have terrain in the Mt Cook, Fiordland and Mt Aspiring National Parks.

Our Helicopter Ski Touring & Snowboarding Camps are based from light weight expedition style tent camps. The location of the  camp will depend on current conditions and the forecast for the trip. Mountain conditions, snow quality, and weather are constantly changing.

Client review -

"The scenery, terrain, and snow were incredible. Skiing powder while looking over a turquoise blue lake Wakatipu with the mountains of New Zealand's Southern alps beyond is an experience that I will never forget..." C.Butler, UK - (Helicopter Accessed Ski Touring Trip in the Humboldt Range near Glenorcy, Queenstown.)

Sample Itinerary

On the first morning  we will meet at 8.30am at our office in Queenstown. Your guide will brief you on the current snow & mountain conditions and the location that has been chosen for the camp.

After the briefing your guide will check through your equipment. Please read through the equipment checklist carefully to ensure that you have everything needed before arriving at our office. After the gear check we will then drive to the helicopter staging area, this will take between 10 minutes (Queenstown) and 1 hour (Wanaka). Once at the helicopter staging area we will fly into the mountains at the first possible time.

Mountain conditions are changing constantly and each day of a Backcountry Helicopter Camp will be different and unique. The location of the camp will depend on current conditions. We will normally be dropped off at the top of a skiing and boarding run so we will get to enjoy some powder skiing and boarding as soon a we get out of the helicopter. It is normal to do about 3-4 climbs and downhill powder runs exploring the backcountry.

Day two typically starts at around 8.00am with breakfast and preparations before heading out into the mountains for the day. Expect to be on the move for 6-8 hours. Your guide will assess the snow conditions daily and plan the best use of current conditions depending on your groups skiing and boarding ability, fitness, and goals for the trip.

On the final day of the trip we will fly out by helicopter. You can expect to be back in Queenstown by 5.30pm on the final day of the trip.
